Danny Purtell

In January 2019 I relocated from the UK to Malmö, Sweden and I became a core member of Ars Nova Copenhagen.

Alongisde this I am also a full time member of Vor Frues Kantori at Copenhagen Cathedral. As a freelance singer I regularly sing with some of the top ensembles in Europe, including I Fagiolini (Robert Hollingworth), Musica Ficta (Bo Holten), Casa da Musica (Paul Hillier), Mogens Dahl Kammerkor (Mogens Dahl) and Christian IVs Vokalensemble (Ruben Munk).

I have previously worked as a Lay-Clerk (adult chorister) at York Minster, Peterborough Cathedral and Portsmouth Cathedral and I was the inaugural recipient of the Stile Antico Foundation Bursary for young singers.

In 2014, I formed the Willow Consort, a choir dedicated to performing a wide range of largely unheard and underperfomed repertoire in the UK. The choir has gone from strength to strength and in 2017 we recorded our first CD of American Sacred Choral Music with Convivium Records.

I am a highly experienced choral director, whose ability to engage and inspire has been honed through rehearsal and performance over a number of years with adults and young children.

I have a large amount of experience in working with amateur choral groups – ranging from full-size choral societies (The University of York Choral Society, UK with up to 150 singers) to smaller chamber groups (Divers Voyces, UK, 8-12 singers).

I am able to offer a range of courses designed for every individual choir. I can explain in depth about tuning and intonation to a range of different levels. How to practice and produce healthy vocal technique, develop singers’ own musicality and also how to really get into a piece of music. Starting with the text and working out what the composers’ intentions are.

I am a native English speaker so I may be particularly useful for any groups working on English repertoire for guidance on authentic pronunciation. However I am very comfortable working with music in any language.

I would be delighted to work with groups of any ability.
